Bookseller Recommendation: In this brief, short book, Luiselli unpacks and describes an entire system of cruel checks, barriers, and treatment that is forced upon some of our most vulnerable - children. This book is about the unaccompanied minors trying to get across the Mexican/ American border to start new lives in the US. Luiselli worked at the federal immigration court, translating the stories of children who had recently crossed. It’s this perspective which is both desperately needed and devastating. Instead of the previous 12 months, under new legislation these kids had 21 days to find legal representation. They had so little it was virtually impossible unless they already had someone here waiting for them - and that person wasn’t trying to evade legal detection themselves and could afford it. Even though this is often a difficult read, it’s a vital one in this time of walls, borders, cages and dehumanisation.

‘We are driving across Oklahoma in early June when we first hear about the waves of children arriving, alone and undocumented, from Mexico and Central America. Tens of thousands have been detained at the border. What will happen to them? Where are the parents? And why have they undertaken a terrifying, life-threatening journey to enter the United States?’

Valeria Luiselli works as a volunteer at the federal immigration court in New York City, translating for unaccompanied migrant children. Out of her work has come this book – a search for answers and an urgent appeal for humanity and compassion in response to mass migration, the most significant global phenomenon of our time.
